CULTURE & EVENTS
YUKIGASSEN, VARDØ
Yukigassen will be held in Vardø, Finnmark, from March 13th to 16th, 2025. Yukigassen is a snowball game for teams that originated in Sobetsu, Japan.
This winter sport was developed in the mid-1980s and has since become a major sport in snowy regions of Japan. It was introduced to Vardø in 1996, with the first championship held there in 1997.
VARANGER ARCTIC KITE ENDURO
Varanger Arctic Kite Enduro (VAKE) is a long distance snow kiting competition for teams. It starts in Berlevåg, ends in Vardø and lasts for five days.Teams of two contestants are kiteskiing from Berlevåg across the Varanger Peninsula to Vardø. Varanger Peninsula has a varied and exciting terrain that will create abrupt changes in wind, weather and snow conditions along the route.
VALO ROCK
We call it a boutique-festival because we give you bands that you usually see in bigger venues in a club. «A complete unique experience» said everyone that visited us the last time. So get your pass and join us in a musical excursion that you wont forget.
POMORFESTIVALEN
With the coolest and most welcoming town in the north, along with our beloved Kiberg as the venue and host, we invite you to the Pomor Festival! Rooted in the Pomor trade and Vardø’s rich cultural history of fisheries, coastal traditions, and community life, the festival has been celebrated since 1991.
Varangerfestivalen
The Varanger Festival is Finnmark’s largest festival and one of Norway’s oldest, celebrating its 42nd year. It takes place in Week 32 each summer in Vadsø, Eastern Finnmark.
We offer a diverse program featuring jazz and various other genres, proudly showcasing our own productions and artists from the Northern regions.
Vuonnamárkanat
Vuonnamárkanat is an annual market held on the last Saturday in August.
The first modern Vuonnamárkanat was held in 2005 in the outdoor area of the Varanger Sami Museum. One of its core principles is maintaining a distinct Sami profile. Vuonnamárkanat is intended to be a Sami meeting place—a venue where it feels natural to speak Sami, see Sami text, and wear traditional Sami clothing (kofte).
BLUES I VINTERMØRKET
«Blues I Vintermørket» is a unique blues festival held in the far northeast of Norway. As a celebration marking the arrival of the darkest time of the year, the festival turns Vardø upside down for an extended weekend in mid-November each year. From Tuesday evening to the early hours of Saturday, «Blues I Vintermørket» leaves its mark on our town. November was chosen because the entire island is bathed in a blue hue, created by the interplay of light and darkness—typical of the Arctic climate zone.
